The Southeastern Junior Golf Tour won the 4th Annual Nike Cup 43 to 42.5 over the Cannongate Junior Tour, which is based out of Georgia. The Nike Cup is a Ryder Cup style event that featured four-ball, foursome, scramble and singles matches played last Saturday and Sunday on the Senator Course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail’s Capitol Hill in Prattville, Alabama. Each match was nine holes with a win getting you 1 point and a tie getting you a half point.
The event got underway with four-ball matches Saturday morning. Cannongate took the lead after the first set of matches 7.5 to 4.5. Cannongate extended their lead after the foursome (alternating shot) matches 14 to 10. The last round of the afternoon featured scramble (best ball) matches. The SJGT made a push and cut into Cannongate’s lead. After the first day, Cannongate had the lead 19.5 to 16.5.
The final day of competition featured two rounds of 9-hole single matches. The SJGT carried its momentum from the scramble matches into the first wave of singles matches. Heading into the final matches of the competition, the SJGT had the lead 30.5 to 29.5. The last round of matches carried as much excitement as the USA’s 2008 Ryder Cup Victory in Kentucky. The right to take home the Nike Cup trophy came down to the last putt of the last match, which featured Trevor Page (SJGT) of Birmingham against Andrew Bourg (Cannongate) of Fayetteville, Ga. The score of the competition heading into the last hole was in the Cannongates’s favor at 42.5 to 42. Page stood over a 1-foot putt for a bogey to halve the hole and win the match 1 Up. Page sank the putt to give the SJGT a 43 to 42.5 victory.

SJGT Will Conduct Two Events This Weekend -- |

The SJGT will conduct the Southeastern Junior in Georgia and the Cambrian Ridge Junior Classic in Alabama on September 11 & 12. The Southeastern Junior will be held at the Country Club of Columbus, while the Cambrian Ridge event will take place on the Sherling and Canyon nines at the RTJ Trail’s Cambrian Ridge in Greenville.
The Southeastern Junior is in its fifth year on the tour’s schedule, but the event has a 40-plus year history at the Country Club of Columbus. Last year’s Overall Male and Female Champions were Cody Sapp (Male 16-19) and Alex Harrell (Female 12-14). Sapp will return to try and defend his title. Jared Bettcher, who won the Male 14-15 Division last year will also be back to defend.
The Cambrian Ridge Junior Classic will make its debut on the SJGT schedule in 2010.
